Garfield senior Troy Robinson is the fastest boy in the City Series this year.

Victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes validated that Friday in the league championship meet at Ellet, along with his running the anchor leg of the Golden Rams’ triumphant 400 relay.

He hopes to add more accomplishments over the next three weeks in the postseason.

“I think not overtraining going into district and regional is the key to making it to state,” Robinson said. “I just keep an eye on the competition and try to run.”

Robinson’s speed could make him a first-time state qualifier this season.

“I never really thought about it much until last week,” Robinson said of the state meet. “That would be a fantastic feeling. I definitely thought I had a chance, but I’m not sure I thought I would be doing this well throughout the regular season going undefeated.”

Nordonia senior Taylor McDonald is the top girl in the Suburban League hurdle events. She is on the opposite end of the spectrum, having qualified and placed at state.

“I feel like you just have to continue to work hard,” McDonald said Saturday after winning the 100-hurdle and 300-hurdle titles at Nordonia. “Being there at state is a great opportunity to run with the fastest people. It is nice to go against the competition. I was nervous. Other people had faster times than me. I didn’t know how I was going to do. I don’t map the race out in my head. I just run and whatever happens, happens.”

Firestone seniors Brooke Morgan and Imani Scott both have high hopes for the postseason. Scott said competing with “heart and confidence” is vital. Morgan agrees.

“You have to have confidence,” Morgan said. “If you think you can, you will.”

This time of year is also an emotional time for athletes, coaches and parents. Green senior Erika Rector was one of just many to show excitement after winning Saturday.

“I gave coach [Maedene] Pfouts a big hug,” Rector said after it was announced on the loudspeaker that Green won the Suburban League girls team title. “I was looking around and was like ‘Where is coach Pfouts?’ I wanted to find her.”

Sophomore Denzel Ward led Nordonia to the Suburban League boys team title.

Young Griffins

Buchtel coach John Scott glowed Friday as he spoke about his first-place boys team and second-place girls team.

“[Junior] Antonio Hambrick had a special day in my mind,” Scott said. “He hadn’t practiced in three weeks. He fractured his hip out here in a meet against Firestone and Ellet. He had not run since, but [Friday] he got cleared to run.

“The idea was he was going to run one event. He was going to run the 400. He said to me, ‘Well, can I run the 4x800?” I said ‘Yeah, you can run the 4x800.’ I thought it would be a good idea because you can get loosened up and see how you feel before the 400, which will be faster. He ran on that relay and they got first place. He ran the 400 and he got second place. His teammate was first, [junior] Javier Gaiter. And then, the 4x400, we were missing some people and Tone asked to do it. So he did and they placed first. He did all those things and had an awesome day.”

Buchtel’s boys team also features juniors Darnell Wilson, Stephen Mosley and Christopher Davis and sophomores Jalen Elton, Kendrick Johnson, Mario Skipper and Kavontae Woods.

“Darnell Wilson is a find this year too,” Scott said. “He won both hurdle events. When he was a freshman he came out a little bit, then disappeared and I never saw him again with the track and field team. Last year, never saw him. This year he came out and started showing some signs of doing something during the indoor season. He also ran on the first place 4x400 relay.”

Buchtel’s girls team features seniors N’Dea Lee-Orsley and Ashaunte Dent and several underclassmen. Raven Green and Simone Green, Brittany Tate-Lockett, Sabreigha Dixon, Jayla Bowens and Dana Oliver are top sophomores. Juniors Emani Griffin and Donny Harris are also major contributors, along with freshman Anntoinette Harmon.

Talented Falcons

Firestone coach Tim Carroll is also happy with his teams after the girls placed first and the boys took third place behind Buchtel and Ellet.

Morgan, Scott and Jasmone Richardson are the Falcons’ top senior girls. Amari Johnson, Megan Zanin and Yolanda Sims lead the junior class. Freshmen Te-Shell Thomas and Payton Rae and sophomores Dara Perry and Taliyah Carter are also key point-scorers.

Carroll has been happy with the development of sophomore boys Jeremy Thomas and Kamar Majid.

Michael Beaven can be reached at 330-996-3829 or mbeaven@thebeaconjournal.com.

The undefeated teams in City Series baseball will square off today and Wednesday.

Ellet (17-8, 10-0) and Firestone (13-13, 10-0) will meet twice this week at 4:30 to determine who wins the regular-season title.

Firestone hosts today’s game, and Ellet hosts Wednesday’s game.

Ellet coach John Sarver said seniors Andrew Myers, Russell Kline, Cory Campano, Cody Martin, Brandon Hendershot, Zach Ross and Josh Yeager have played key roles in terms of leadership and production.

Myers, Hendershot and junior Zack Artis anchor the pitching staff and Kline is a top hitter. Juniors Jacob Isenhart, Christian Burkhart and Andrew Neal and sophomore Andrew Knicely have also contributed.

“I am a little surprised that we came along as fast as we did,” Sarver said. “We had a lot of seniors graduate from last year. I was a concerned with our experience on varsity. We had a lot of kids who had not played varsity or had limited experience.”

Ellet started 0-4 this season, but has earned wins over North Canton Hoover and Tallmadge and Ravenna. Ellet defeated visiting Massillon 7-3 Thursday in a Division I sectional semifinal and lost to host Lake 1-0 Friday in a sectional final.

Firestone (13-13, 10-0) lost its Division I sectional semifinal to host Stow 5-1 Thursday. The Falcons split a doubleheader against host Twinsburg on Saturday.

“We have really played our best baseball over the past week,” Firestone coach Aaron DeBord said. “Even in losses to Stow, Twinsburg and North Olmsted, we played well.”

DeBord said improved pitching and defense has helped an offense that has produced hits and runs for a majority of the season.

The Falcons feature five seniors: Drew Fite, Tom Lehman, Nick White, Tyler Edgerson and Austin Williams. Juniors Jacob Eberly, Ben Hayes, Richard Burroughs and Robert Hart have also made an impact. DeBord said Lehman and Hayes are Firestone’s most consistent hitters.

Sophomores Corbin White, Alex Cole and Kody Von Stein have also been intriguing this season. Cole and White are the Falcons’ top pitchers, and Von Stein is a solid hitter.

Michael Beaven can be reached at 330-996-3829 or mbeaven@thebeaconjournal.com.

MACEDONIA: The Nordonia boys track and field team added another win to its victory tour Saturday at the Suburban League Championships.

The host Knights competed in their 12th meet of the season and for the 12th time they finished ahead of the competition.

Nordonia won the boys title with 144 points and Green won the girls crown with 118 points. Wadsworth placed second on the girls and boys side with 122 points and 112 points. Green (113) and Copley (109) rounded out the top four boys teams. Nordonia (109.33) and Highland (100) rounded out the top four girls teams.

“I am thrilled with how our kids performed today,” Nordonia coach Scott Barwidi said. “We had thought the meet would be very, very close and we put a lot of pressure on the kids. We always put pressure on them with different things and our kids have responded. We talk about competing all the time and they did that.”

Nordonia’s boys went 7-0 in league duals and are 5-0 in invitationals.

“This was exciting and fun,” Knights sophomore Denzel Ward said. “There was some great competition here. I just like to come and compete at real big meets like this.”

Ward set a stadium and school record in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 4 inches.

Junior Emily Hooker led Green with wins in the 100-meter dash (12.67 seconds), the 400 (56.65) and the 200 (25.58). Sophomore Elizabeth Mogus (discus throw, 111-1), senior Morgan Estes (pole vault, 12-6) and senior Erika Rector (800, 2:15.48) also won events.

“When we went to Austintown Fitch and got third at the Optimist with seven athletes, we knew that we could do very well here,” Green girls coach Maedene Pfouts said. “We just didn’t know how things would work out. Liz had her personal best in discus. We knew she would place high, but that was a nice surprise. This is the first we have had Emily compete in four events because she has had some injuries. Everything came together.”

Rector was thrilled with the victory and dashed off to prom after the meet ended.

“I’m kind of shocked,” Rector said. “I didn’t expect this coming in. I’m just so happy because everyone did what they needed to do. Emily winning three events was huge. This was her first time running four. Morgan did amazing in the pole vault. I’m just so proud of everyone. It just feels like we are a young team, especially compared to last year. We lost a lot of talent. To come back and win is awesome. I don’t think anyone expected it.”

Ward also ran legs on winning relays for Nordonia. The 800 relay won in 1:29.35 and consisted of Ward, junior Brandon Truett, sophomore Brandon Wilson and junior Sterling Brabson. The 400 relay included Brabson, Truett, Ward and junior Jordan Nobles and clocked a 43.06.

Sophomore Jermaine Muse (high jump, 5-11) and junior Theo Washington (300 hurdles, 39.23) also won titles for Nordonia.

“We just work hard in practice and compete with each other,” Nobles said. “We encourage each other every time.”

Other top girls

Nordonia senior Taylor McDonald won the 100 hurdles (15.33) and 300 hurdles (44.52).

Wadsworth won three relays and junior Sarah Berger was first in the 1,600 at 5:08.76. The three winning relays were the 3,200 (Berger, junior Courtney Palange, senior Michalla Gordon and sophomore Madi Salem in 9:34.08), the 800 (Gordon, senior Ally Malkowski, Palange and junior Leah Runkle in 1:44.00) and the 1,600 (Palange, Berger, Runkle and Gordon in 3:56.08).

Cloverleaf had two winners, senior Angela Landrum (shot put, 35-8¾) and junior Ashley Murray (3,200, 11:18.21).

Highland senior Rebecca Koval won the high jump at 5-3, and the Hornets won the 400 relay in 50.2 with sophomore Sam Duale, senior Paige Springhetti, senior Hallie Sours and freshman Lauren Zuro.

Other top boys

Wadsworth junior Hunter Williams won the 100 in 11.17 and 200 in 22.18. Senior Nick Seme (discus throw, 167-4) and junior Nick Winkler (1,600, 4:24.17) also took firsts.

Tallmadge won the 3,200 relay in 8:02.73. The unit consisted of junior Brian McGovern, sophomore Nick Murray, sophomore Zack Murray and junior Patrick Ferguson. Ferguson also won the 3,200 in 9:53.36.

Green freshman James Angel won the 400 in 50.06 and ran a leg on the triumphant 1,600 relay (3:25.44). Freshman Amir Joya, junior Blair Thompson and senior Seth Wieland ran the other three legs.

Highland had two winners, junior Mason Simmons (pole vault, 13-0) and senior Stuart Arbuckle (800, 1:58.23).

Cloverleaf junior Tom Wangler (shot put, 46-10¾) and Copley senior Aaron Boles (110 hurdles, 15.20) rounded out the boys winners.

Michael Beaven can be reached at 330-996-3829 or mbeaven@thebeaconjournal.com.
High school track/City Series Meet: Buchtel boys, Firestone girls take titles

The Buchtel and Firestone track and field teams continued their recent domination of league foes Friday in the City Series Championships at Ellet.

There were 32 events contested and the two schools combined to win 23 of them.

It came as no surprise that the Buchtel boys won a team title with 143 points and the Firestone girls earned a team crown with 153 points.

The only doubt was which school would win the girls title, as the Falcons held off the Griffins, who scored 148 points.

Garfield senior Troy Robinson had one of the signature performances by winning two individual events and anchoring the victorious 400-meter relay. Robinson clocked 10.7 seconds in the 100 and 22.3 and 200. He joined senior Garland Brandon and juniors Darnell Griffin and Travonte Thomas to win the 400 relay in 43.7.

“I am very pleased with this performance going into district,” Robinson said. “I am ranked pretty high in the state in the sprint events. I am happy with these times.”

The Buchtel boys won eight events and the Firestone girls won four events. The Buchtel girls won nine events.

“This was a very good performance by the boys,” Buchtel coach John Scott said. “We have had some injury problems and some people missing. The kids toughed it out today and did a great job. We tried to score points in every event we could. . . . I am happy with how both the boys and girls competed and performed today.”

Buchtel’s boys won two relays early in the meet. Javier Gaiter, Jalen Elton, Antonio Hambrick and Kendrick Johnson won the 3,200 relay in 8:37.9. The 800-relay unit of Stephen Mosley, Gaiter, Christopher Davis and Mario Skipper clocked a 1:32.1.

The Griffins won the 1,600 relay in 3:33.4 with Gaiter running anchor leg after Johnson, Darnell Wilson and Hambrick.

“This was fun and we did a good job,” said Gaiter, who also won the 400 in 52.2. “We just came out with a mindset to work hard and do well.”

Hambrick ran for the first time in three weeks after suffering a fractured hip.

“This was a good sign and a good performance for us,” Hambrick said. “I am excited to compete in the postseason.”

Wilson also won the 110 hurdles (15.7) and the 300 hurdles (42.4), and Kavontae Woods won the discus throw (150-4) and shot put (46-2) for Buchtel.

Firestone’s girls won the 1,600 relay in 4:11.2 to clinch its win with senior Imani Scott running the anchor leg.

“We finally came together as a team and did not let criticism get to us,” Scott said. “We took constructive criticism from our coaches and competed.”

Scott followed sophomore Taliyah Carter, freshman Te-Shell Thomas and sophomore Dara Perry in the relay.

“I feel great and think that we came together and did what we needed to do,” Thomas said. “We motivated each other and never gave up.”

Firestone had three individual champs; Thomas (400, 59.1), Amari Johnson (long jump, 16-4) and senior Brooke Morgan (high jump, 4-9).

“This will definitely get us in the right mentality for postseason,” Morgan said. “This gives us additional confidence to bring what we need to compete at district.”

Said Perry: “We overcame a lot of situations during the season. I am so glad that we came together and united as a team.”

The Falcons girls utilized their depth to win.

“I thought this was a pretty solid effort by our team,” Firestone coach Tim Carroll said. “We ran pretty consistently throughout the meet. The girls were able to put up the points that they needed to squeak out a win. This was close. I am very happy with my girls’ effort. They have worked hard all season. You know they are going to show up and compete, and that is what you want.”

Raven Green and Simone Green led Buchtel’s girls. Raven won the 100 hurdles (15.4) and 300 hurdles (47.2). Simone won the 100 (12.3) and the 200 (25.5). Buchtel’s Emani Griffin won the 800 (2:28.5) and Antoinette Harmon won the shot put (34-0¾)

Griffin joined Brittany Tate-Lockett, Donny Harris and Sabreigha Dixon to win the 3,200 relay in 10:41.1. Buchtel also won the 800 relay in 1:44.1 with Jayla Bowens, Dana Oliver, Tate-Lockett and Simone Green; and the 400 relay in 49.5 with Oliver, Bowens and both Greens.

Ellet’s Kristi Kester finished first twice. She won the 1,600 in 5:51.9 and the 3,200 in 13:06.2. Teammate Leah Campbell placed first in the discus with a throw of 99-9.

Firestone’s Jeremy Thomas earned first place in the 1,600 (4:42.1) and the 3,200 (10:30.1).

Two boys from Kenmore won titles, Desean Ballinger (800, 2:04.5) and Darrin Woods (high jump, 5-9).
OHSAA announces competitive balance proposal failed, transfer rules softened

The effort to level the playing field in Ohio high school sports took two hits Thursday.

The first was to adjust which division schools were assigned for the state playoffs in select team sports. The second dealt with the eligibility of student-athletes who transfer. In both cases, athletic programs that have been extremely successful will benefit.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that member school principals voted against the competitive balance referendum that would have moved schools based on the number of students outside of their district. The final vote was 327-308 against the proposal with 188 not casting a vote. The OHSAA mailed out 823 ballots to high schools.

The principals did vote in favor of reducing the transfer bylaw penalty from one year to the first 50 percent of the maximum allowable regular season contests in any sports the student participated the previous year and reduces the number of exceptions for immediate eligibility. This change passed 346-288 and becomes effective June 1.

OHSAA Commissioner Dr. Daniel B. Ross said on a 45-minute conference call that he was disappointed that the competitive balance proposal failed and by the large number of principals who elected to not vote on the issue.

“It failed by 19 votes,” Ross said. “Percentage-wise, it was 48.5 to 51.5 percent.

“We knew the competitive balance would be close. I was hoping it would pass. … This is a very passionate issue. We believed it would be close and it was the closest one yet.”

Ross was in favor of reducing the length of ineligibility for transfers who are approved under the existing rules.

This is the third competitive balance proposal that has been created recently.

The next proposal could be to have separate public and private tournaments.

“That issue is still on the table, where that goes, I can’t speak on that,” Ross said. “I still know that it is an issue that is still out there.”

This proposal was to change how schools are assigned to tournament divisions in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. Rather than place schools into OHSAA tournament divisions based strictly on male or female enrollment, an adjusted enrollment count would have been used.

The adjusted count would have been derived by multiplying a sport specific factor by the number of students in grades 9-12 on each team roster whose parents reside outside the public school district or the attendance zone of the school, then adding that number to the original enrollment count.

Other similar competitive balance proposals failed 339-301 in 2012 and 332-303 in 2011. Approval of this year’s proposed amendment would have been implemented in 2015.

“I will be consulting with our Board of Directors to see what action, if any, we take next, but I anticipate at a minimum that a proposal on separate tournaments for public and non-public schools will again be placed on the ballot next spring via the petition process,” Ross said.

Ross said four votes submitted were invalid and 27 arrived after the deadline, which was May 15 at 4:30 p.m. Most principals received a ballot on May 1.

“This was so close, 10 schools vote the other way and this passes,” Ross said. “We will bring the committee back and let them look at the results, and see if there are some things they want to tweak.”

Ross said a survey will be sent out to member schools regarding competitive balance, and that meetings will continue to take place to discuss options. He also said “you can’t force schools to vote.” He is open to other proposals, which could be voted on in May 2014.

A breakdown on how public and private schools voted was not made available, and there were also no details on how schools voted by division. Schools who chose not to vote were not released either.

Ross said the OHSAA looked at how other states conduct tournaments, and that other states are watching what is done in Ohio. He mentioned several states are considering competitive balance or have made changes, including Louisiana, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana and Georgia.

Other notable issue

A proposal that would have permitted open houses to take place in specified facilities other than the high school campus was opposed 324-309.

Michael Beaven can be reached at 330-996-3829 or mbeaven@thebeaconjournal.com.

Sometimes sports go beyond the game itself.

The Barberton Magics were a team playing for a cause in Thursday’s 11-1 victory over visiting Ellet in a Barberton Division I sectional final.

Gabe Carneal, brother of sophomore outfielder Abbey Carneal and cousin of sophomore pitcher Macy Kaisk, died unexpectedly Friday at the age of 16.

On Thursday, the Magics (19-5) rallied around their two mourning teammates to do the one thing they could do for them on the field: win.

Coming into the game with no practice time after spending Tuesday at calling hours and Wednesday at the funeral, the Magics came to play.

After a slight hiccup to begin the game, the Magics rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the first inning after Ellet (12-12) scored a run in the top half of the inning and continued to score at every opportunity thereafter.

Sophomore outfielder Kloee Cuckler led off with a double to the gap in left-center field and scored two batters later on an RBI single by junior shortstop Kelsey Wilson.

Kaisk, batting cleanup and starting on the mound, singled before a Courtney James walk loaded the bases with one out.

Freshman catcher Kayla Rorrer lined an opposite-field single to drive in two and gave the Magics a 3-1 lead.

Barberton continued its hot hitting the following inning when the Magics batted around and scored four runs on singles by Wilson and Rorrer.

“When runners got on base we hit them in,” Barberton coach Amy Garner Cardenas said. “That was big.

‘‘We haven’t done that consistently this season.”

Cuckler doubled again in the third and James later smacked a double off the center-field fence to score two more and put the Magics ahead 10-1.

Cuckler reached base all four times she went to the plate, finishing with a single, two doubles, a hit-by-pitch, three runs scored and one RBI.

“That’s why she’s my leadoff hitter,” Cardenas said. “Because she gets on base. She’s smart up there and she’s aggressive.”

Wilson finished 2-for-3 with two singles, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

Rorrer drove in three runs with two singles.

Kaisk turned in an impressive performance on the mound, earning the win to improve to 13-3.

She gave up two hits and one unearned run in five innings. She struck out six and walked none.

At the plate, she went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Carneal played left field but did not bat in the game.

The Magics will host Medina in a district semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial donations can be made to the Carneal family to be distributed for youth sports.

Read the high school blog at http://www.ohio.com/preps.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Thursday that member schools principals voted against the referendum on competitive balance that pertains to public and private schools.

The final vote was 327-308, and 188 did not vote. The OHSAA said it mailed out 823 ballots to high schools.

Here is the release from the OHSAA:

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Seven of the nine proposed Ohio High School Athletic Association constitution and bylaw revisions passed as voted upon by OHSAA member schools, Commissioner Daniel B. Ross, Ph.D., has announced. Highlighting the voting was approval of a significant change to the transfer bylaw, but a proposal to change how schools are placed into their tournament divisions for team sports failed for the third consecutive year. Overall, changes were approved to two constitution items and five bylaw items.

The change to the OHSAA transfer bylaw reduces the penalty for transfer from one year to the first 50 percent of the maximum allowable regular season contests in any sports in which the student participated the previous year and reduces the number of exceptions for immediate eligibility. This change, which will be applied both retroactively and prospectively, passed 346 votes to 288 and becomes effective June 1, 2013.

Highlighting the two bylaw issues that did not pass was a proposal to change how schools are assigned to tournament divisions in the team sports of football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball to address competitive balance. Rather than place schools into OHSAA tournament divisions based strictly on male or female enrollment, an adjusted enrollment count would have been used. The adjusted count would have been derived by multiplying a sport specific factor by the number of students in grades 9 through 12 on each specific team roster whose parents reside outside the public school district or the attendance zone of the school, then adding that number to the original enrollment count. The competitive balance proposal failed 327 to 308 (51.5 percent to 48.5 percent). Other similar competitive balance proposals failed 339 to 301 (53 percent to 47 percent) in 2012 and 332 to 303 (52 percent to 48 percent) in 2011. Approval of this year’s proposed amendment would have been implemented in 2015.

“When this new proposal was placed on the ballot, we said at the time that the vote would come down to the wire, and it certainly did,” Ross said, “It’s disappointing that it did not pass because we believed this formula addressed the main issue to which schools voiced concern: the impact on athletic success by students on a school’s team roster who are from outside that school’s geographic boundary or attendance zone.

“As everyone is aware, this is the third year in a row a competitive balance proposal has been narrowly defeated. I will be consulting with our Board of Directors to see what action, if any, we take next, but I anticipate at a minimum that a proposal on separate tournaments for public and non-public schools will again be placed on the ballot next spring via the petition process.”

A proposal that called for all OHSAA tournaments to be conducted separately for public schools and non-public schools was removed from this year’s ballot in late March when the OHSAA and the petition originator, together with representatives from his group, mutually worked to reach a resolution on the issue. It was replaced by the latest competitive balance proposal.

“I believe separation of our tournaments is not the best option,” Ross added. “That being said, I also believe almost 50 percent of our member schools believe some type of change is needed, but no one seems to have the answer for what change would satisfy the most people. One thing seems pretty certain, though: this issue is not going to go away. It’s something in which many, many other states are also struggling to find an answer.”

All nine 2013 proposals were placed up for referendum vote by the OHSAA Board of Directors. High school principals had between May 1 and 15 to cast their votes on eight of the issues, and one issue was voted upon by 7th- and 8th-grade principals. A simple majority is all that is required for a proposed amendment to be adopted.

The complete final voting results are available on the OHSAA website (ohsaa.org), and the 2013-14 OHSAA Constitution and Bylaws will be posted on the site sometime in late June or early July.

A Review of the Other 2013 OHSAA Referendum Issues

Constitution 5, Governance— Changes the ex-officio member on the OHSAA Board of Directors from the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) to a representative of the OIAAA rather than the president-elect. Effective date: August 1, 2013.

	551 in favor; 85 opposed

Constitution Article 8, Amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws— In the event that a conflict would arise with Ohio state law or proposed legislative action that necessitates an immediate change in the bylaws or constitution, this change permits the Board to authorize an emergency petition for vote of the membership to change or modify a bylaw or article of the constitution. Effective date: August 1, 2013.

	561 in favor; 75 opposed

Bylaw 4-3, Enrollment and Attendance — Adds a note preceding Section 3 to clarify enrollment status; amends exception 7 of Bylaw 4-3-1 to note that students who attend STEM schools are also subject to the transfer bylaws, and modifies Bylaw 4-3-2 to make it clear that the bylaw applies only to the application of the semester bylaws within this section and also clarifies that a student is still considered to have transferred whenever his or her enrollment is changed to another high school, even if the student has not been officially withdrawn from the former high school. Effective date: June 1, 2013.

	557 in favor; 79 opposed

Bylaw 4-6-3, Residence— Adds language that would permit the Commissioner’s Office to grant eligibility to a student who moves into Ohio with an individual who has had legal custody of the student for more than one year and the parents do not reside in Ohio. The student would not be eligible until ruled so by the Commissioner’s Office. This also adds another exception that addresses an unusual situation in which a United States citizen, who is precluded from obtaining a J-1 visa due to his or her U.S. citizenship, cannot study in the United States for one year when the parents are not U.S. citizens and live outside the United States. This exception would permit just one year of participation in interscholastic athletics. Effective August 1, 2013.

	562 opposed; 71 in favor

Bylaw 4-9, Recruiting — This proposal would have permitted open houses to take place in specified facilities other than just the high school campus.

	324 opposed; 309 in favor

Bylaw 4-10, Amateur— Modifies the bylaw by permitting students to receive travel expenses to competitions from sponsors that are not connected with their school. Effective date: June 1, 2013.

	460 in favor; 171 opposed

Bylaw 4-4-5, Scholarship (7th-8th Grade Issue)— Adds exceptions 1 and 2 to this scholarship bylaw to track the same provisions that are found in the high school scholarship bylaw (waiver for a student who has been withdrawn of removed from school due to accident, illness or family hardship; ability to restore eligibility when an ‘incomplete’ has been received in one or more courses due to calamity days, family tragedy or illness/accident and the ‘incomplete’ is recorded in accordance with board policy). Effective date: August 1, 2013.

	347 in favor; 183 opposed

823 high school ballots were mailed, 667 ballots were returned including 4 invalid and 27 past the deadline (81 percent)

765 7th-8th grade ballots were mailed, 369 ballots were returned including 4 invalid (48.2 percent)

Lexie Handley didn’t need a lot of extra help Wednesday, but her St. Vincent-St. Mary softball teammates provided it anyway.

Two six-run innings was more than enough and Handley proved to be too much for visiting Norton in a 12-0 victory in a Fairless Division II sectional semifinal at Patterson Park.

Just one week earlier, Handley fired her first career no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Firestone.

She did it again Wednesday, allowing no hits against the Panthers.

“Today was a good day,” said Handley, a 6-foot-1 freshman left-hander. “We were hitting the ball a lot. My team did a really good job and my coaches were calling the right pitches. My pitches were just hitting their spots today and that’s always a good thing.”

She only had to go five innings this time, as the Fighting Irish prevailed in 4½ innings because of the mercy rule.

Norton (9-13) only put two balls in play as Handley (7-2) struck out 13. She issued three walks.

As a result, St. V-M (12-7) advances to another big game today. The Irish will play a 3 p.m. sectional final at Northwest.

Against Norton, a six-run second inning ensured the Irish would not have to sweat the rest of the way. Handley actually got the first RBI, on a bases-loaded walk.

Sophomore Bailey Steadman then smacked a single to left that was misplayed, and she reached third as three more runs came in for a 4-0 lead.

Freshman catcher Bekka Mayle followed with a smash down the left-field line that rolled all the way to the 252-foot chain-link fence for a home run to make it 6-0.

Mayle, Handley’s longtime battery mate, also performed flawlessly behind the plate.

“I’ve been catching her since I was in second grade.” said Mayle, “so it’s like really great to have that kind of chemistry.”

Mayle reached base in all three at-bats. She walked in the first and doubled and scored in the six-run fourth, along with the two-run homer.

“As soon as I hit it, it felt great on the bat and I just sprinted all the way,” she said.

Steadman’s two-run homer to the right-center gap was the big blow in the fourth, which also included hits by Handley and sophomore Courtney Johnson and an RBI groundout by senior Katie Gilbride.

Norton coach Dick Castilow said early fielding miscues contributed to his team’s downfall.

“We let two singles be a double and a triple,” he said. “Can’t give people extra bases. That was kind of our undoing and it just kind of steamrolled from there.

“Can’t make mistakes against a good pitcher, you only put the ball in play twice against. She did an excellent job. She had a great curveball, kept us off balance.”

Norton freshman Selena Rodriguez furnished the biggest challenge to Handley’s dominance. She walked twice, fouling off multiple pitches in 10- and eight-pitch at-bats.

The Irish made the most of their seven hits and have won 11 out of 13 since an 0-5 start.

“The six-run inning kind of took the game over, and at that point we were kind of in cruise mode,” said St. V-M coach Tony Ninni. “[Handley] pitched a very, very good game again. She’s doing well.”

Read the high school blog at http://www.ohio.com/preps.

Grant Conzaman set to retire as Walsh Jesuit Athletic Director in June

Athletic Director Grant Conzaman has announced his retirement, effective June 28, 2013, marking 40 years of service to Walsh Jesuit High School.

“Grant is the consummate gentleman and has been an outstanding Athletic Director and employee for 40 years,” Walsh President Karl Ertle said. “He truly exemplifies our mission, which he has carried down through our coaching staff, our parents and all involved with the Walsh Jesuit athletic community. His tireless work ethic and commitment to not only the Walsh Jesuit athletic program, but the Walsh Jesuit community is irreplaceable, and he truly will be missed.”

Conzaman began his career at Walsh as a guidance and college counselor in 1973. In the fall of 1978, he was named Athletic Director.

From 1978 until 1994, Conzaman served as both Athletic Director and counselor, becoming full-time Athletic Director in 1994.

During his 40 years as the head of the school’s athletic program, Walsh has won 37 state championship titles, seven national titles and over 50 individual state champions. He has also expanded the men’s program from eight sports to include soccer, swimming and diving, bowling, lacrosse, volleyball and ice hockey. In addition, Conzaman was instrumental in the establishment of the competitive women’s program in 1993 when the school moved to coeducation.

Under Conzaman’s direction, Walsh hosts a variety of annual tournaments in cross country, golf, volleyball and track and field. He also founded and is the director of the Ironman Wrestling Tournament, a tournament that attracts top wrestlers from across the country.

Conzaman has served as the tournament director for Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSSA) regional, and state semifinal soccer games, and sectional wrestling. He also serves as a mentor for new high school athletic directors in the area.

Conzaman has received numerous accolades for not only his contributions to Walsh athletics, but to the students and coaches he serves as well. In 2006, he was honored by the Northeast Ohio Alliance of Catholic Athletic Administrators as the Athletic Director of the Year.

In 2007, Walsh’s Athletic Booster Club established an annual scholarship in his name that provides $1,500 to two graduating student athletes. The award honors student athletes who possess a strong work ethic and desire to be a team player. The award is a testament to Conzaman’s leadership style, a man behind the scenes, quietly doing the right thing. In 2009, Conzaman was also awarded the Sportsmanship Ethics and Integrity Award from the Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Conzaman and his wife, Chris, have been married for 44 years and are the parents of Steve (Shauna) and Sara (Chris) Arnold. The couple have six grandchildren: Jack, 10: Lena, 8; Abby, 8: Callie, 6: Emma, 4; and Grant, 2.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio Conzaman was raised in Rocky River, graduating from Rocky River High School in 1965. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Case Western Reserve University in 1969 and a master’s degree in higher education from Cleveland State University in 1971. He also completed doctoral work in counseling at the University of Akron from 1971-1975.

Prior to joining Walsh, Conzaman taught science at Cleveland’s Central Junior High School.
